7/06/07: Framing out the new spaces

The only remnant of the head’s office will
now become part of one of the new second
grade classrooms.
Interior of the gym, temporary housing for over 3,000 pieces from 59 former work and class spaces, moved in approximately ten days.
The connection point between the new Middle
School and the library is made and windows
have been installed. At the lower right is the breezeway entering onto the playground.

Final ceiling beams in the top-floor classroom on the North side of the new building.
View (from Library) of future site of front stairs up to Main doors of the new Middle School. Black waterproofing covers the ceiling of the data and electrical rooms.

3/15/07: Steel Beams Go In!

Students sign one of the beams. The beam is installed in the new building!

View North through the framing. Plywood flooring covers the multi-purpose room.
Metal decking is welded to the 2nd floor steel beams. The deck is a form for concrete that will be poured on top.
Rebar, for strength, is tied in a crossing pattern is laid on the metal decking before the concrete is poured.

Concrete is pumped into the area then is formed by hand (2nd floor).
Concrete finisher using a walk-behind power trowel to finish the floors (2nd floor).

2/22/07: Multi-Purpose Room and Elevator Take Shape/Steel is Delivered!

Completed elevator shaft.

The first load of steel. Top layer of asphalt has been applied on newly widened Fourth Avenue.

1/5/07: Shotcreting (Concrete applied with a pneumatic hose)

Once shotcrete is applied, worker scrape excess with a large screed (upper left) then follow with trowels to smooth down walls to the final surface (lower right).
Looking at the main building from the approximate location of the main door to the new middle school building.
Looking NE at the ground floor of the new middle school building.
This will be the area of the multi-purpose room.

Close-up off wall getting shotcrete. The bottom half has been finished; another level of shotcrete will be applied to the top. Steel rebar is embedded in the concrete to add strength.
Workers shotcrete an exterior walls of the new middle school building. Worker on the left has an air hose to blow away loose debris so the concrete can have the best surface to adhere to. Worker on the right has the shotcrete gun.

11/20/06:

Stairs leading from the Nob Hill turnaround to the lunchroom ready
to be poured.

Sections of the Nob Hill street turnaround being poured.

The pump operator controls both the movement of the crane and concrete flow with the wireless controller strapped around his waist.
The foundation of the electrical transformer pad is poured. The concrete pumper fully extended can reach 150’ in five sections.
The east wall of the new playground getting some much needed fill placed for drainage.

Workers applying some drain mat to the foundation of the new middle school (the black mat in the lower right). A water proof product will be applied over this.
The trench that is filled with water in this photo will feed the electrical service from Fourth Avenue to the new electrical room.

10/19/06: Paving

new NE parking lot.

9/29/06: Soil Nailing and Pouring Concrete

Project team stands at the new elevation of Nob Hill turnaround, where the street level has been lowered approximately
four feet.

Cast in place concrete wall forms awaiting concrete at the north edge of new access drive.
Concrete is pumped into forms.

days after pour.

Concrete truck passes concrete to another truck which pumps it up the arm (green) and down the chute.

8/24/06: Retaining Walls

The future parking lot at Fourth and Newell
begins to take shape.

Between the two new walls (where the backhoe is working) is where the new
play court will be.
This view is looking up from the level of the new play court.

Our superintendent Mike Horgan (L) and
foreman Ryan Gellerson (R) take a
moment to show their faces.

The rear deck of the Nob Hill house is framed
up and ready to be completed.

8/10/06: Utility Preparations

This is the segmental retaining wall which
will separate the new access drive from
the house we are converting to administrative use. Stairs will connect the drive to the deck on the back of the house.
This is the trench that was dug for the
new fire line water service. It’s about 11’
deep and goes about 4’ underneath the
building before coming up through the
existing floor.

This trench measures 3’ wide by 3’ deep and will contain electrical feeds from the new middle school building. The old electrical service entrance will be replaced by a new one on Fourth Avenue.

7/24/06: Grading and Excavating

These photos give an idea of how deep we have to dig to build a good base for the new driveway. The
excavators have dug down until they hit soil firm enough to lay down the bed of crushed rock. Utility
piping will be laid on top of the tamped rock.

After excavating approximately 10 feet down, this manhole
is level and ready to be connected and backfilled around.

7/10/06: Site Preparation

Fencing will shield the academic buildings for the duration of the school year from the excavation and construction.

Water utilities are moved into place at corner of Newell St and 4th Avenue N.

5/12/06: Demolition
