Clay Animation - Fall 2008

Open to 1st-4th Grades

Course Description:

Have you ever wondered how clay-animated movies like "Wallace and Gromit" are created? In this class, students learn how to operate a digital camera and work in a team to create fictional commercials, shows, and news events through the process of clay-animation, which are then compiled into one large production. This production will combine the work of at least 5 different schools at a time. At the end of each course, their work will then be displayed on the internet (www.cancancancan.com and on Youtube) in the form of "webisodes" (similar to "episodes'). In addition, they will receive a DVD of their finished product.

Through animation, students learn basic physics principles (momentum, acceleration, friction, collision), math (measurement, fractions, timing, patterns, cycles) language arts (storyboarding, story structure), art (sculpture, composition, color theory) and music (composition, voice-overs).

Instructor Background:

Lukas Allenbaugh (a.k.a. "Mr. A") has worked with children for 14 years as a public school teacher, Artist-in-Residence, and after-school/summer program teacher. Over the last 4 years his students have collectively taken over 500,000 animation photos. Lukas has also taught comic book illustration, all-school mural and mosaic projects, portrait and 3D drawing, papier mâché, kite building, and drum building.

On a regular basis Lukas directs multi-age after-school and summer programs. Students work in small groups of 2 or 3, which allows for age and ability grouping. Lukas supports each small group in animating at their own level, while teaching general concepts to the entire class. He has witnessed amazing animations created by students of all ages. At the beginning of every new session students get to see their animations from the previous week. Students learn from watching the animations of their fellow classmates, animations from other schools, the instructor's samples, and professional examples such as Wallace and Gromit.
