Tons of Fun at the Middle School
Washington State Math Championship!
Seattle Country Day School was well represented at the Middle
School Washington State Math Championship tournament held at
Blaine High School (near the Canadian border) on Saturday,
April 19, 2008. This tournament is the largest academic
competition
in Washington State with over 1200 middle school mathletes
competing from across the state. Coach Granya O'Neill,
and 16 SCDS middle
schoolers and their families attended the competition. After
driving thru a blinding snow storm on Friday afternoon, April
18th, the families stayed at Semiahmoo Resort for a relaxing
evening. SCDS middle school students included 6th graders:
Vikram Dhawan, Timothy Randolph, Luka Sherman, Srinidhi
Srinivasan,
Alec Wade, Clare Tingstad, and Fletcher Woodruff; 8th graders:
Moriel Behar, Skyler Brochet, Nick Firmani, Jillian Gerke,
Matthew Groden, Ryan Kupyn, Michael Land, Brian Masterson,
and Sophia
Vokos. Most of the students took a refreshing evening swim
in the indoor/outdoor pool the night before, while parents
enjoyed
socializing with each other. The next day families migrated
to Blaine for a day of invigorating mathematics. The
competition
included: a 30-problem individual test, mental math problems
(no calculators), probability, algebra, geometry and a "potpourri" exercise.
Vikram Dhawan earned an individual award for 15th place among
all competing 6th graders. The 6th grade team comprising of
Vikram Dhawan, Timothy Randolph, Alec Wade, and Fletcher Woodruff
earned
5th place among all 6th grade teams. The team of Skyler Brochet,
Ryan Kupyn, Michael Land, and Brian Masterson earned 2nd place
among all 8th-grade teams. Brian Masterson and Skyler Brochet
earned individual awards for their 4th place and 12th place
finish among all competing 8th graders. At the conclusion of
the math
tournament most of the students made their way to Burlington
for Spring Reign (ultimate Frisbee tournament).
