back to 4-5 Curriculum

Grades 6, 7, and 8

The overall goal of the physical education program at SCDS is to enhance skills, coordination and physical fitness for a lifetime of health and wellness. Maximum participation and individual success are the key objectives, regardless of a student’s ability. Students have access to technology through the use of heart rate monitors that provide immediate feedback on
health and fitness objectives. The spatial abilities of the students at SCDS require creativity and independently guided activities. In addition to regular on-campus PE classes, our older middle school students have unique opportunities to enhance individual success, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and social interaction in the community through an impressive array of recreational pursuits at many off-campus venues, with professional expert instruction in martial arts, dance, in-line skating, rowing, aerobics, yoga, golf, swimming, weight training, and sailing.

Skills that are developed in Middle School encourage the students to:

MOTOR SKILLS
• Throw a variety of objects demonstrating both accuracy and force.
• Design and perform gymnastic sequences that combine traveling, rolling, balancing and weight transfer into smoothflowing
sequences with intentional changes in direction, speed, and flow.
• Understand and apply more advanced movement and game strategies.
• Identify the critical elements of more advanced movement skills.

HEALTHY AND PHYSICALLY ACTIVE LIFESTYLE
• Participate in games, sports, dance, and outdoor pursuits in and out of school, based on individual interests and capabilities.

PHYSICAL FITNESS
• Demonstrate appropriate fitness in four areas: cardiovascular (twelve-minute walk/run), flexibility (sit and reach), muscular
endurance (curl-ups), and muscular power (modified pull-ups).
• Apply concepts and technology needed for use of heart rate monitors.
• Assess physiological indicators of exercise during and after physical activity.

ENJOYMENT AND INTERACTION THROUGH PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
• Recognize the role of games, sport, and dance in getting to know and understand self and others.
• Identify benefits resulting from participation in different forms of physical activities.
