Curriculum All students receive core instruction in language arts, mathematics, social studies, science and physical education. In addition, they have classes in art, music, computer education and Spanish. Teachers design lessons that stimulate curiosity, creativity, and the capacity for critical thinking. SCDS has a commitment to the establishment of fundamental skills necessary for children to confidently explore their own interests. A blend of traditional and progressive approaches is used. Teachers draw curricular ideas from a wide range of sources including carefully chosen texts, current research in their field, other talented teachers as well as their own observations, explorations and imaginations. SCDS has a well-earned reputation for its Kindergarten through 8th grade science and mathematics programs. Students are introduced to innovative approaches as they hone their skills. Beginning in 4th Grade, students experience lab-based science every day and are able to implement the scientific process. Many of our students, as well, aspire to the humanities and are exposed to the best strategies and examples available. Humanities teachers walk a delicate balance in their classes as they encourage creative self-expression and fluency as well as solid skills in spelling, grammar, word usage and formal writing skills. Technology is used as an important tool to support our emphasis on thinking
and reasoning skills. Computer education involves both direct
lab instruction and classroom projects. Students begin computer
instruction with trained specialists at the kindergarten level. By eighth
grade, they are comfortable
with a variety of applications in robotics, word processing, spreadsheets,
databases, elementary programming,
telecommunications and digital multimedia. This foundation of knowledge
is reinforced and All students participate in our eight-week Winterim program. On Fridays during January and February students may choose from a variety of instructional experiences both on and off campus. Options typically include alpine skiing, snow boarding, cross-country skiing, ice skating, field trips, and artist residencies. Student progress is monitored carefully through a variety of means such as ongoing authentic assessment and standardized testing. Academic and social growth are documented wiyh written report cards and parent conferences each year. Evaluation of student work focuses on personal endeavor and individual progress. Report cards are generally comprised of a checklist of specific skills accompanied by narrative teacher comments. SCDS does not give letter grades.
