Faculty

Seattle Country Day School is an exciting place for both students and teachers. Teachers are encouraged and supported in their continued pursuit of professional goals. Energetic, imaginative and thoroughly professional, the leadership and staff represent vast amounts of specialized educational experience working with highly capable children. SCDS teachers are skilled in the "Science" of teaching, including current methodologies and expertise in their subject areas; also, they are masters at the "Art" of teaching, knowing how and when to apply the right approach to light up the eyes of each student.

Some of the teaching strategies which work with our students include:

  • group dialogues which encourage children to explore ideas together
  • occasionally introducing an advanced concept for students to mull over without need for mastery at that level
  • observing children, finding out what excites each one of them
  • focusing on thinking processes that lead to answers rather than on correctness of answers
  • trying to generate many solutions to problems rather than one
  • allowing children to work at their own levels by presenting open-ended challenges
  • integrating subject areas through themes
  • encouraging children to develop ideas and solutions in their own way
  • emphasizing that mistakes are an important part of learning
  • trying not to provide answers for the children but supporting children as they struggle to answer their own questions
  • remembering that the most successful teachers don't merely instruct but provide opportunities for children to discover and learn
