Grades 4-5 Spanish Teacher Miriam Ayala and SCDS Librarian Debbie Pearson partnered up this May to create an inquiry-based cross-division project for their students. The learning started in the Library with the reading of How Tia Lola Came to
Visit Stay by acclaimed writer—of children's, young adult, and adult fiction—Julia Alvarez. The reading of How Tia Lola Came to Visit Stay was followed by a discussion in both English and Spanish where topics such as 'what is a stereotype' and learning about the culture in the Dominican Republic were discussed. Miriam Ayala carried the conversation on in Spanish with vocabulary building and artwork. The grade 4 collaboration was celebrated with none other than Tia Lola's favorite drink—fruit smoothies or "Frio, Frios."
