SCDS grade 5 students invited Eastside Prep fifth graders to campus for an educational two-hour Spanish immersion experience on Wednesday, May 2, 2018. All students aimed to strengthen their Spanish skills while engaging in simple yet fluid conversations over reading and writing. Taking conversational skills outside the classroom created an authentic experience which lent itself to more natural conversations. Students also participated in a science activity led by Eastside Prep Science Teacher Ms. Kuffner, wrote digital stories (on iPads!) in Spanish, participated in a 'gift exchange', and engaged in song (Hola Don Pepito) with SCDS Grades 4-8 Music Teacher Sue Ellis. The day itself was a collaborative effort on the part of SCDS Grades 4-5 Spanish Teacher Miriam Ayala and Eastside Prep Grade 5 Spanish Teacher Josefa Ruiz. The two met at a foreign language educator's workshop at the University of Washington (UW) this past spring.
