SCDS Students Featured on KING 5 News for Participation in Green Lake Derby

Taking full advantage of learning opportunities this summer, twelve SCDS students, poised to enter grades 4 and 6, raced man-made boats in Green Lake's Lucerne Seafair Milk Carton Derby on Saturday, July 14, 2018. Combining critical thinking skills with their new nautical knowledge, the group worked together to calculate the weight of milk cartons, plywood, themselves, and the percentage of buoyancy. The result? Three sturdy boats that caught the attention of local news outlet KING 5.

The reporter created a 3.5 minute segment to showcase the students' craftsmanship, even hopping on a vessel to test if he too could float above the waters of Green Lake. One SCDS grade 6 student also taught him fast facts about the mathematics used to ensure the boats' success.

Not skimping on math or language skills, SCDS'ers appropriately named their creations Udder Chaos, Deja Moo, and Mooana. Clad in Viking attire for Udder Chaos, Hawaiian-themed swimwear for Mooana, and ice cream toppings for the banana split boat Deja Moo, they caught the eye of the announcer, who explained to the crowd, "Those hats are the cherries on top – not to be mistaken for raspberry berets."

After a 10:30 a.m. start and a race between other kids within their age group, all three boats made it across the finish line with no sign of sinking. Mooana placed first in its heat and all three teams are brainstorming milk carton creations to race in next year's event.

SCDS students always keep busy. Learn how others are staying active on land in Director of Admissions Kate Briscoe's blog.
