Athletics
There are many athletic outlets for students with varying interests and comfort levels. Our teams include soccer, Ultimate, basketball, volleyball, cross-country, track and field, and tennis. Individual improvement is important, but we emphasize team over self. Collaboration and cooperation learned in the classroom also translates on the field, promoting individual and group progress. "We want to expose kids to sports as part of a life-long learning process," says Athletic Director Chuck Lintz. "At the same time, we want our program to be fun and competitive."
Ultimate Frisbee is especially popular at SCDS. Every year, faculty members—many of whom are players themselves—chaperone students at Hold Back the Snow, an Ultimate Tournament that includes over thirty teams from across North America, and where SCDS's Middle School team has been champions twice. Parents of players also participate in an exchange program with Canadian players during the tournament. And for families who love to be in the bleachers as much as the field, the alumni-owned Seattle Cascades invites SCDS community members to Memorial Stadium every summer to watch a professional Ultimate game.
