Community Events

We believe meaningful and memorable education starts with a strong community. SCDS hosts several events throughout the year to keep families engaged with one another. Some events you can look forward to include:

First Day Coffee and Parent Volunteer Fair

Sip on freshly brewed beverages while you mingle with other families and peruse all of the opportunities to get involved during the upcoming school year.

Fall Parent Coffees

Held on mornings in September, Parent Coffees are a great way to informally mix and mingle with fellow grade-level parents.

Back-to-School Night

At this event you will hear from teachers and dive into the curriculum your child can look forward to in the school year ahead.

Annual Giving Day

Join SCDS families, faculty, and staff in showing your support of the school by making a gift to the school's Annual Fund. As our way of saying "thanks-a-latte" for the direct difference you make in propelling problem solvers forward, we will send you off with a hot coffee beverage.

Halloween Parade

Students in grades K-5, alongside eighth grade buddies, come together on Halloween to show off their inventive costumes and socialize with friends across divisions.

Engineering Event

Each November, grades 4-8 students demonstrate their handmade rigs in front of the SCDS community.

Winter Gear Swap

To prepare for Winterim, families can participate in the Winter Gear Swap to purchase lightly-used clothes and gear at bargain prices.

Grades 4-8 Open House for Current Families

This event allows current K-8 parents to speak with our Intermediate and/or Middle School faculty and experience inquiry-based lessons. The evening ends with a presentation about our high school transition program and a panel of SCDS parents and alumni.

For six Fridays during the start of winter, students participate in Nordic skiing, alpine skiing, or ice skating and art. These lessons focus on building confidence, endurance, and sense of adventure. Also, for one Friday during Winterim, SCDS alumni are invited back to ski with the community!

MLK, Jr. Assembly

This assembly is woven into social studies units across all grades. Students have the opportunity to show what they've learned by honoring important figures in history, commemorating the Civil Rights movement, and speaking to what still needs to be accomplished. All families are welcome.

Book Swap

Historically, over 1,000 books are donated for SCDS's annual book swap. On the day of the event, students in grades K-5 bring a bag and select the books they want to take home to add to their growing collection.

Math Adventure

Teams of students in grades K-5, along with parent volunteers, join together for an adventure-filled evening of math puzzles, deductive reasoning, and team spirit.

SCDS Auction

The SCDS Auction, one of the school's largest events, alternates yearly with Shine. Produced by the Parent Council with support from the Advancement Office, the auction is not only a fundraiser—supporting approximately 6% of the school's operating budget—but a ‘friendraiser’ that gathers our community together for the benefit of SCDS students.

Every other year, SCDS hosts Shine, a community-building event which illuminates and celebrates what is unique about our school. The focus of Shine is to have fun, celebrate our community, and raise funds for the school while deepening connections.

International Night

International Night celebrates culture, community, and camaraderie. Community members host booths representing cultures and countries from all over the world, and families are invited to learn, play games, and enjoy a meal together.

Grandparents and Special Friends Day

For one day in the spring, grandparents and special friends are invited to campus to see what life at SCDS is like.

Spring Concert

Students play instruments, perform songs with their class, and debut their own original songs. Our after-school Focus Choir and other ensembles also perform.

Crazy Carnival

The Crazy Carnival takes over campus for the final Saturday prior to the end of the school year. It is a K-8 celebration for students and families that includes carnival games, bouncy houses, water games, face painting, musical chairs, cake walks, and more.

Eighth grade students' time at SCDS culminates in a ceremony that includes faculty and student speakers, student performances, the granting of diplomas, and a reception.

Summer Playdates

Each summer, families host playdates at various public parks so students can meet each other before the first day. This is a great way to introduce your family to the community and begin forming friendships in anticipation of the school year.
